Hey you, what’s that sound?
Thinking aloud on why the creation of audio hasn’t shot along at the same pace as video, image and text. I will be thinking about this quite a bit… at Rainford St by davidgillespie
As the description says about, I was thinking aloud about audio on the web, and my gut says it hasn’t moved into the mainstream web the way sharing text, video and images have. I suppose what I really mean by that is the rise of the amateur creator - not the inde band but whatever the equivalent is for someone filming their friends on a phone and uploading it or taking a picture with Instagram.
The adage that a picture is worth a thousand words has a lot going for it. In thinking about sound itself, I’ve been wondering if maybe audio alone isn’t worth infinitely more. There’s an account on SoundCloud I’m having trouble finding where people upload messages they’ve been left, and listening to those feels infinitely more intimate than an image can muster. There’s something about being free to create the image yourself, to put something of your own into the voice you’re hearing.
I think location and audio coming together is a big deal, it’s something I’ve been working on in my spare time. I’m going to go spend some time with the guys at SoundCloud next week as I’m in Berlin. I’m looking forward to reporting back on what I find, I think they’re doing something pretty special.
Oh, if you’re in Berlin and want to say hi while I’m there, get in touch!
